| HOTELS: All of our hotels are 4-star category with most of the modern conveniences (and most of them working most of the time). Several have health clubs. Yes, there are hairdryers. PEOPLE: You will find the Turkish people warm and friendly. Whereas in other countries your guard should go up when you are approached "what is this person trying to sell me or steal from me" with the Turks you will find they are genuinely trying to be helpful. And usually in the tourist areas and larger cities they will speak some English. It will be of little use to inform you that the Turkish language belongs to the Uralo-Altaic group and has an affinity to the Finno-Hungarian languages since most of you don't speak either Finnish or Hungarian. You will need to rely on your English and lots of body language. MEALS: Buffet breakfasts at the hotels are included every morning. Dinners, with a few exceptions are buffets to simplify ordering. On our travel days, I have arranged for our lunches and am paying for them outside of the tour package. Because of this added expense, drinks will NOT be included on this tour. You will read my warning below about the water. If they bring it to you in a restaurant, it is safe to drink. SHOPPING: May I recommend that you not buy anything during our first few days in Istanbul. Shop with your eyes to get an idea of prices. I am including an informative demonstration on carpets in Cappadocia. You can buy at this outlet store or wait until we return to Istanbul. You may use US dollars for carpet purchases, or credit cards, or even personal checks in some cases. And of course you can use Turkish lira. Fair warning: On my first trip to Istanbul I had absolutely no intention of buying any carpets. I came home with two of them and love them both. NOTES: There are several important differences between this tour and my other tours. First, there are three "one-night stands." Second, our hotels are not centrally located. This was not possible for this tour. Third, do NOT, I repeat, do NOT drink the water. The first thing you will do when you arrive in Istanbul is to buy water. Finally, you will find that you can use US dollars for shopping. You may even get a better price. |
